THE QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED MOST
FITMENT
How do I know which bracket fits my vehicle?
Use the vehicle finder or browse by make. Each product page lists the exact years, generation and variants it fits. If your vehicle sits at the edge of a year range, or has an unusual trim or seat, send us a photo of your front seat bolts and we will confirm before you order.
Which side should I fit it to?
Most drivers fit the passenger side so the extinguisher is out of the driver's footwell but within reach. Some fit the driver side, some both. KAP describes brackets by the physical side of the vehicle as you sit in it, not "driver" or "passenger", because that flips between countries. In a US left-hand-drive vehicle, a left bracket is on the driver's side.
My vehicle has power seats. Does that matter?
Sometimes. Power and manual seat bases can differ within a model. The product page states which seat types the bracket fits. If it does not mention yours, ask.
Does it fit both front seats?
Some brackets suit either side, some are handed, and some vehicles have a bracket for one side only. The product page states which.
My vehicle is not listed. Can you make one?
Often, yes. Russell designs brackets against the actual vehicle, so we need access to one. Tell us what you drive on the Request a Vehicle page. More requests move a model up the list, and if you are near Boise, Idaho, we may ask to measure yours.
INSTALLATION
How hard is it to install?
It is designed for straightforward installation with standard hand tools: loosen the relevant seat bolts, position the bracket, refit the fasteners per your vehicle manufacturer's procedure. Check your product page for model-specific notes first; they override the general guide. Full steps and video are on the Installation page.
Do I need to drill?
No. Every KAP bracket uses the vehicle's existing seat mounting points. Nothing is drilled, cut or glued.
What torque do I use on the seat bolts?
Your vehicle manufacturer's specification, from the service manual or a dealer. KAP does not publish seat-bolt torque values because the vehicle maker sets them. The manufacturer's procedure may also call for replacement bolts, threadlocker or a tightening sequence. Follow it.
Will it affect my vehicle warranty or lease?
Fitting an aftermarket accessory does not automatically void a vehicle warranty; coverage depends on the circumstances and the cause of any fault. If you are concerned, check your vehicle warranty terms or ask your manufacturer or dealer. For a lease, check your agreement. The bracket does not require drilling or permanent modification and is designed to be removable.
Does the seat still move?
It must adjust and lock securely after installation. Seat travel depends on the extinguisher fitted; a large extinguisher can potentially limit seat movement. After installation, confirm the seat adjusts and locks securely. If seat travel is unexpectedly reduced, the seat binds or catches, or the seat does not lock securely, do not drive. Contact us.
Do you supply the bolts?
We supply the M5 bolts, nylock nuts and washers that attach your extinguisher cage to the bracket. The bracket is secured to the vehicle using the seat fasteners specified in your vehicle manufacturer's procedure.
Should I get it professionally installed?
You can fit it yourself. We recommend having the seat fasteners and the seat-belt and airbag clearances checked by a qualified technician afterwards.
EXTINGUISHERS
Does it come with an extinguisher?
Not at launch. KAP extinguishers for the US are coming. The Installation tells you what to look for in the meantime.
What size extinguisher does it take?
The 2.5 lb class, commonly used in vehicles in the US. Exact cylinder dimensions are on each product page and in the compatibility guide.
Can I use the plastic mount that came with my extinguisher?
No. The bracket is designed for a metal-strapped cage with a latch, suitable for vehicle use. Metal cages are available for every common cylinder size.
Can I use the extinguisher while driving?
No. Never remove or use the extinguisher while the vehicle is moving. Stop safely and secure the vehicle first.
MOTORSPORT AND COMPLIANCE
Is it approved for racing in the US?
US sanctioning bodies do not approve brackets; they set requirements the mounting must meet, usually a metal quick-release bracket with metal fasteners within reach of the belted driver. KAP brackets were developed to Australian motorsport specifications. Check your sanctioning body's current rulebook and ask your scrutineer if unsure. See Compliance and Claims.
Is it DOT or NHTSA approved?
No. KAP brackets are not approved or certified by DOT or NHTSA. No Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard establishes a specific approval or certification standard for aftermarket fire-extinguisher brackets. NHTSA does not approve aftermarket accessories, so anyone claiming such approval is wrong. See Compliance and Claims.
Can I use it for a work vehicle or fleet?
Yes. Where applicable, FMCSA and OSHA require extinguishers in work vehicles to be securely mounted and readily accessible, and a bolted, vehicle-specific steel bracket can support meeting that across a fleet. Operators remain responsible for their own compliance. See Fleet and Commercial.
