COMPLIANCE AND CLAIMS
WHAT WE CLAIM, WHAT WE DO NOT, AND WHY
A fire extinguisher bracket sits close to your seat, your belt and your airbags. We take the words we use about it as seriously as the steel.
WHAT A KAP BRACKET IS
A vehicle-specific steel bracket that secures a hand-held fire extinguisher, in its own metal cage, to a vehicle's factory seat mounting points, within reach of the driver or passenger, without drilling or modifying the vehicle. It holds the extinguisher. It does not prevent, detect or suppress fire and is not a fire suppression system.
US FEDERAL REGULATION
KAP brackets are not approved or certified by DOT or NHTSA. No Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard establishes a specific approval or certification standard for aftermarket fire-extinguisher brackets. NHTSA does not approve or certify aftermarket accessories. KAP does not claim its brackets are "DOT approved," "NHTSA approved" or "FMVSS certified." No bracket maker can truthfully make that claim.
What does apply: installation must not interfere with seats, seat belts, airbags or other required safety systems. That is why our instructions require seat adjustment, locking and clearance checks. KAP keeps order and product records so we can contact customers directly if a safety notice is ever needed.
MOTORSPORT
Heritage. KAP brackets were developed for Australian motorsport, where a hand-held extinguisher must be secured in a metal bracket and be removable by the driver without tools. KAP brackets have been made to Motorsport Australia specifications since 2014.
United States. That heritage describes how the product was developed and proven. KAP makes no representation that a bracket satisfies the rules of any motorsport sanctioning body unless expressly stated in writing for a specific rule set. US compliance pathways are in development.
US sanctioning bodies set their own extinguisher and mounting requirements, and they change. Most require a metal, quick-release bracket secured with metal fasteners, within reach of the belted driver. Check your sanctioning body's current rulebook before your event and ask your scrutineer if unsure. Common references: SCCA General Competition Rules, NASA Club Codes and Regulations, NHRA Rulebook, and your club's supplementary regulations.
If your sanctioning body requires an SFI-certified or FIA-homologated fire system, a hand-held extinguisher in any bracket is not a substitute.
COMMERCIAL AND FLEET VEHICLES
Where applicable, FMCSA (49 CFR 393.95) requires commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce to carry a securely mounted, readily accessible fire extinguisher, and OSHA (29 CFR 1910.157) requires portable extinguishers in the workplace to be mounted and readily accessible. Neither rule certifies or approves a bracket. A vehicle-specific, bolted steel bracket can support compliance with the mounting and accessibility requirements. KAP does not make a vehicle or fleet compliant; operators remain responsible for their own compliance program, inspection schedule and extinguisher selection. See Fleet and Commercial.
